Poetry

Golly-Wolly was a fish,

Orange from head to fin

He lived in anonymity

For no one knew of him

His home was an anemone

A modest little pad

Stayed inside his home-sweet-home

Comfortable but sad

Till one day his self-help book

Said ‘upstream with you, go’

Golly said, “I’ll try it, yes”

Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do

Though he was orange, he felt blue

So changed his attitude

Acted like a bigger fish

Becoming very rude

Golly got to drinking

Too much water from the sea

Shooting off his fish lips

Caused a fight, or two, or three

This is where our story ends

Suddenly and sadly

He took on one shark too many

Should have stayed home in anemone

fini’

In our day we wrote

treasured letters, lovingly

sealed with a kiss

Like crumpets and tea

his accent, prim and proper

Brilliantly British

His worship of her

utterly irrelevant

There he sits – silent

old man playing sudoku

content with his life

Bright little  faces

imploring me for answers

they already have
